Dr. Yau-Hwang Kuo is a distinguished professor at National Cheng Kung University, where he was appointed Executive Vice President and Director of Alumni Center in February 2023. Prior to his appointment at NCKU, Dr. Kuo was seconded by Executive Yuan as Minister without Portfolio. He also served as a Board Director at National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs), President of Taiwan Smart Living Space Association, Chairman of Institute for Information Industry (III), a member of Board of Science and Technology (BOST) and Executive Secretary at the Office of Science and Technology, Executive Yuan (2016-2017). He was a Board Director at Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC), Director at Computer Science and Information Engineering Program II, NSC, and President of Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence.

Dr. Kuo is the pioneer of digital life technology research in Taiwan. He founded and chaired the Center for Research of E-life Digital Technology (CREDIT) at National Cheng Kung University in 2000. He was also the former Director of the Center of Excellence for Computer System Technology at National Cheng Kung University. In addition to Dr. Kuo’s academic responsibilities, he was formerly seconded and served as the Dean and distinguished professor at College of Science, National Chengchi University.

Dr. Kuo has long been involved in the planning and promotion of technology and driving digital development policies in Taiwan. During Dr. Kuo’s secondment to the Executive Yuan, he was responsible for the planning of the new ministry of the Executive Yuan, namely, the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA). Dr. Kuo was awarded First Class Merit Medal from Executive Yuan (2022) with recognition of his outstanding contribution. Dr. Kuo is an award-winning teacher and his prestigious awards include Medal of Electrical Engineering from Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering (2017), K.T. Li Breakthrough Award from Institute of Information & Computing Machinery (2011), Outstanding ICT Elite Award from ICT Month (2011), University Industrial Contribution Award for Individual Contribution from Ministry of Economic Affairs (2009), Linux Golden Penguin Award from Taipei Computer Association (2005), and Teaching Excellence Award over multiple years along with many others. Dr. Kuo also has extensive experience in industry-academia-research collaboration and has served as an advisor to a number of industry associations, companies and start-ups, including two start-up companies that he co-founded.

Dr. Kuo’s research and teaching interests include: Internet of Things, Edge Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analytics, Blockchain, Information Security, and Mobile Communications.
