A respected community leader and successful entrepreneur, Dr. Kung is married to Principal Wan-li Chang, who has been actively involved in community work in South Bay for 40 years.
After graduating from the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, Dr. Kung continued his education and received a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He also received an MBA from Santa Clara University.
From 1974 to 1978, he worked in the Optical Division of Hewlett-Packard Company (HP). In 1983, Dr. Kung joined SDL as a co-founder and Vice President of Manufacturing. SDL has become one of the world's leading publicly traded optical communications companies. In 2000, he co-founded Sonlight Communications and served as President/CEO until its acquisition by Opnext in 2003. After the acquisition, he continued to serve as Senior Vice President of Opnext. Since 2006, he has been a partner of Acorn Ventures.
In 2003, he led a team of entrepreneurs back to Taiwan to establish Hwasung Optics, a technology company that develops and manufactures fiber optic communication components such as lasers and transceivers. Huaxing has become a major supplier of fiber optic components worldwide and was listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in December 2011. He served as the Chairman of Huaxing until 2018.
In recent years, Dr. Kung has been dedicated to promoting Chinese participation in the American mainstream. He served as a school board member of Fremont Union High School District. During his tenure, he has made significant contributions to the promotion of multiculturalism. He has also been involved in many other social organizations and foundations, including the Cupertino Rotary Club, Foothill DeAnza College Foundation, and the United Way Silicon Valley Board of Directors. In 2001, he was invited to attend the thirteenth session of the American Leadership Forum. He then served on the Board of Directors of the American Leadership Forum from 2002 to 2009. In 2008, he was invited to join the Board of Directors of 1stACT, a new foundation for the advancement of multiculturalism and the arts in Silicon Valley, and continued to serve as a Director of Silicon Valley Creates in 2015.
In December 2010, he was appointed by the Governor of California to serve on the Board of Trustees of California State University.
In October 2011, the Asian Pacific Fund presented an award to Dr. Kung in recognition of his contribution to building civic harmony by serving as a bridge to the community.
