Dr. Chen graduated from the Department of Physics at NCKU and went to the United States to study for a master's degree in physics at Michigan Technological University and a doctorate in physics at the University of California, Davis. She served as Chief, National Institutes of Child Health of the United States (NIH) until her retirement. For the past 30 years, she has focused on biophysics and vaccine research and development with outstanding results.
Dr. Chen's previous position at the American Institutes for Health (AIH) was focused on public health, where profit was not the goal and the results could be shared unconditionally with poor, low-income countries. For more than a decade, in addition to research and development and clinical leadership, Dr. Chen has assisted in the development and production of vaccines in China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Mexico and other countries. By eliminating the need for costly European and American pharmaceutical products, immunization has been made widely available and hundreds of millions of children have been spared the pain of disease.
Dr. Chan is also involved with the World Health Organization as a member of the STEERING COMMITTEE and as a consultant to the International Vaccine Institute. Through these welfare organizations, she helps to promote global vaccination, research directions, and develop (Please correct character) identification specifications. Dr. Chen feels that helping underprivileged children is the most rewarding part of her work.
Dr. Hsiu-Sheng Chen was selected as a Distinguished Alumni in 2006 for his significant career contributions.
